Mantra from Upnishad—(asto maa sadgamaya) From unreal lead me to real

Here is a mantra from Brhadaranyaka Upanisad

ॐ asato ma sad gamaya
tamaso ma jyotir gamaya
mrutyor ma amritam gamaya
ॐ shanti shanti shanti

Word to word translation of verse

Om(ॐ)—Symbol of almighty
Asato- From unreal
Maa- Not
Sad- Truth, reality
Gamaya- Lead us towards
Tamaso- From darkness of ignorance.
jyotirgamaya- Lead us to light of knowledge.
Mrutyor- From fear of death
Amritam- Immortality
Shanti- Peace

Meaning-
From unreal lead me to real
From darkness lead me to light
From death lead me to immortality
Om, peace, peace, peace…

Here we ask from the almighty god to
lead us from unreality of transitory existence to the knowledge of self or Atman,
from the darkness of our ignorance to the light of spirituality and
from the fear of death towards the immortal knowledge.
ॐ peace, peace, peace…
